As part of the Health and Biomedical Informatics Centre, the Research Information Technology Unit (R2) provides information technology support services to the Australian research community. R2 is built on the strong foundations of The University of Melbourne GRHANITE™ Health Informatics Unit with its headquarters based at the Parkville premises and branch office in Shepparton. R2 main product - GRHANITE™ - has been the main technology responsible for the largest ever ethical collections of data for audit and record-linked research in Australia. This technology covers an estimated of 4 million patient consultations, 200 GP surgeries, 20 pathology laboratories, 20 aboriginal community controlled health services and linkages to national datasets, an example of this is the national death data from AIHW via services provided to BioGrid Australia. R2 will be now expanding its services providing expertise and excellence not only utilising the GRHANITE™ data acquisition technology, but also offering a variety of additional products and services in the years to come.
